Emergency Information

There are very few true orthodontic emergencies. Most problems can be remedied at home.

However, if you have a situation that you cannot resolve on your own, call us as soon as possible, so we can fit you in for a repair appointment. Below you will find helpful and important information that can help resolve minor problems you may encounter during your orthodontic treatment.

What to Do in Case of Emergency?: If you loosen, break or loose any of your appliances, it is important to contact our office as soon as possible.

Please do not come directly to the office -by calling us first, you will allow us to evaluate if you need to be seen and how soon, and to create a time for us to see you without you having to wait in the reception area or displace others who already have appointments scheduled.

Even if you already have a regular appointment scheduled, call us to notify us if you need to have an appliance repaired or replaced as the amount of time reserved for your visit may have to be increased.

Loose Brackets or Bands: Call our office immediately for advice if a bracket or wire is loosened. The bracket may need to be removed or replaced in a timely manner.

You may have a situation that requires cutting a wire or removing a bracket at night or over the weekend. Sometimes the problem can be addressed by you, at home, using common household items.

If this can be accomplished it may save you from having to make an additional trip to our office or, if you need to be seen, it allows us the opportunity to schedule an appropriate type of appointment for you.

Wire Irritations: Sometimes discomfort caused by a wire can be resolved by moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or the eraser on the end of a pencil.

Sometimes one has to cover the end of the wire with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax. It is not uncommon to be able to solve a wire irritation problem with a nail clipper that has been washed and sterilized in alcohol.

Call us. If we cannot "talk and walk you through it" we will gladly schedule an appointment at a mutually convenient time.

Lost Separators: This is a common occurrence and depending upon when your next appointment is scheduled will dictate how soon you need to be seen.

Discomfort with Orthodontic Treatment: During the first week after your braces are in place and routine adjustments are complete, you will likely feel some pain, soreness or discomfort.

You may take acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers while you adjust to your new braces. A warm wash cloth or heating pad may also help relieve any soreness.

Emergency Office Hours: If you have questions or need to be seen after regular hours, please do not hesitate to call our office immediately.

Our staff is on call 24 hours a day for your comfort and peace of mind. You will be provided with a contact number to get in touch with us after office hours and on weekends, in cases of emergencies.
