Type of Braces

Thanks to today’s technology, patients now have more options when it comes to wearing braces. While regular metal braces are still widely used, clear braces are becoming increasingly popular along with removable appliances that can be used for mild cases of misaligned teeth.

Please use this guide below to learn more about the types of braces we offer at our office, and speak with your orthodontist to determine which appliance is right for you.

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces for teeth are the most common type and are now more comfortable than ever. Being made of high grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and arches.

The system involves brackets that are glued to each tooth. This allows more control during treatment than more traditional brackets. With metal braces, you have the option of adding elastics (rubber bands) colors for a more unique colorful smile.

Many patients report faster, more efficient results, which means less fuss and fewer treatment visits for you.

Self-ligating Braces

Dental self-ligating brackets are made of the same materials as traditional brackets. However, self-ligating braces do not require the use of elastics, meaning fewer appointments with the dentist and less friction on the tooth.

Self-ligating braces come with traditional metal, ceramic or transparent brackets. They are the same size of traditional metal braces, but do not use elastics, instead of a bow clip. The clip helps reduce the amount of pressure exerted on the tooth and requires fewer adjustments.

Clear (Ceramic) Braces

Ceramic braces for teeth are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns.

Although less visible, require more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces that are larger and more fragile than metal. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth.

Ceramic braces provide patients with a beautiful, healthy smile in less time than traditional braces. Their special design also provides for greater comfort. Plus their ceramic translucency helps to camouflage the appearance of braces allowing you to maintain a beautiful smile.

Invisalign®

The Invisalign® System is a series of clear overlay templates -called aligners- that have been generated by computer simulation to gradually move the teeth. This system is available to adult patients with certain orthodontic bite problems. Ask us if you are a candidate for the Invisalign® system.

These aligners are great for people whose orthodontic problems aren’t that complicated. These aligners are almost entirely invisible (hence the name) and they aren’t easily noticed.

They are employed for the gradual and effective movement of the teeth from where they are now to where is the healthiest. These also offer the wearer superior oral hygiene because it’s easy to remove them for brushing and flossing or while you eat.

Incognito™ Hidden Braces (Behind the Teeth)

Lingual braces are the best and only totally non-visible form of fixed orthodontic therapy. Lingual braces have continued to evolve, making them a truly reliable form of orthodontic therapy by using principles similar to those of traditional braces.

Incognito™ Hidden Braces provide a new and practically invisible way to change your smile. So no one will ever know you are wearing braces, unless you tell them!

The word lingual refers to the tooth surface next to your tongue, and that’s where Incognito™ Hidden Braces are placed. They are the only behind-the-teeth braces that are 100% customized to the shape of your teeth and to your individual orthodontic treatment.
